Description
Every winter I plant paperwhite narcissus bulbs so that I have something blooming in the dead of winter. They bloom and fill my house with blossoms and a wonderful smell. I photographed these first blooms when the light from my kitchen window seemed to make them glow. Growing and blooming paperwhites are a gentle reminder that life will continue, that the winter will end, and warmth will return.
From Wikipedia: Narcissus papyraceus (from papyrus and aceus; meaning paper-like), one of a few species known as "Paperwhite," is a perennial bulbous plant native to the Mediterranean region. The white flowers are borne in bunches and are strongly fragrant. It is frequently grown as a house plant, often forced to flower at Christmas.
Paperwhites are part of the Narcissus genus which includes plants known as daffodils.
Many cultivars are available and are easy to force into bloom indoors. Unlike other Narcissus species, Paperwhites do not require chilling to promote bloom. The bulbs begin to grow as soon as they are planted, with flowers appearing in 3-4 weeks.
Narcissus papyraceus thrives in moist, peat moss based potting mix. Plants can also be grown in containers of water. Cool temperatures will help to prolong the bloom time.
The derivation of the Latin narcissus (from the ancient Greek νάρκισσος) is unknown. It may be a loan word from another language. It is frequently linked to the Greek myth of Narcissus, who became so obsessed with his own reflection that as he knelt and gazed into a pool of water, he fell into the water and drowned. In some variations, he died of starvation and thirst. In both versions, the narcissus plant sprang from where he died. However, there is no evidence for this popular derivation, and the person's name may have come from the flower's name. Pliny wrote that the plant was named for its narcotic properties (ναρκάω narkao, "I grow numb" in Greek). Again, this explanation lacks any real proof and is largely discredited.
